Farm Journal-October
The first shoots of the Annual Rye grass we planted early this month are coming up now between the rows. Every fall this is part of our ritual. We mow and till between all 30 rows and plant winter grass, to help with weed control and erosion. We also hand weed under every plant, twice.
There is fall color showing on the leaves as the plants prepare for their winter rest but it will take some time for them to transition to full crimson red.
The migrating Canada geese, who visited us late last month, have continued on their journey south. This month we have wild turkey and at dusk the calls of owls, Screech and Great Horned, echo across the field.
We keep walking the rows, checking every blueberry bush for its winter hardiness, taking in the beauty of October.
