Farm Journal- October
The nets are wrapped and the rows weeded, irrigated, and fertilized. The plants will continue to grow this month, soaking up the last canted rays of our autumn sun. Their root systems will be busy too, storing nutrients for the winter months ahead. After a busy season of berry-making, they at not completely at rest yet, that will come late next month when dormancy begins.
In October, the blueberry plants set their spring buds. Once that is accomplished, chlorophyll production will cease and the leaves will turn color, as do all deciduous trees and shrubs. It is already noticeable here and there in the field, starting on the topmost leaves. We look forward to a splendid fall foliage display this year!
