Farm Journal- May 2014
As we enter the month of May we have made great progress on our pruning. Although it is customary and necessary to open up the plants for new growth from below and to cut about a third of the old growth, we are being a touch more conservative this year. There is always a balance to be maintained between what the plant requires for its vitality and longevity and potential summer harvest. We want as many berries as possible and yet if we leave too many canes they will crowd each other out, creating loss instead of gain.
So far the plants look healthy and vibrant in the warming sun, having survived a trying winter and as yet this questionable spring.
