Farm Journal- December
In December all the blueberry bushes have been put to bed, as it were. Small piles of organic leaf mulch have been gathered around the base of each plant to protect their root systems. But the plants can tolerate extremes. In fact, it takes a certain ratio of cold, even frigid days for them to enter into their dormancy, from which they will emerge re-invigorated next spring.
The glorious crimson leaves blew off with the November winds and what stands in their place now are crimson canes. The stark contrast of branch and sky, visible with all deciduous trees and shrubs, is one of nature's most beautiful images and something we cherish about winter.
