Farm Journal ~ May
The field is now a bright spring green as the blueberry plants leaf out. The buds, set last fall, are opening and their bell-shaped flowers will not be far behind.
In the meantime, the resident Bumblebees are finding sustenance among the Purple Deadnettle, nourishing and also medicinal "weeds."
This month we welcome the Dennis Conservation Trust back again for a farm tour (May 17). You can sign up on their website.
Now at mid-month, there is evidence that the winter's cold winds have reduced our blueberries substantially. As the winter month larvae emerge, it is hard to tell what sort of harvest we will have this year! The flowers have formed and dropped and there is little bee presence, the buds forming into berries are few and far between.
