Farm Journal- May
Blueberry buds and leaves are developing rapidly now with the improved spring weather. By month's end the field will be snow white with blossoms and buzzing with bees.
May is a busy month at the farm, as it is on most. Pruning is our top priority- it is a time consuming process, with 1,500 plants, and fair weather dependent. It will be complete by month's end as well and then all the pruned canes will be burned.
Our next order of business is attending to the rows at ground level with fertilizer and mulch. Each of the nozzle heads- 3,000- will be cleaned and the irrigation lines checked and repaired if necessary. Coyotes seem to be fond of digging them out for a good chew- our new pups favor plastic chew toys themselves. All the while we will keep a watchful eye out for signs of Winter Moth infestation which makes it appearance in the spring- fingers crossed.
Even with all this work there is nothing better than being out in nature every spring, especially after a winter like the one we just endured- it feels hard-won, which makes it more beautiful than ever.
