Farm Journal ~ April
As predicted, hardy weeds, Purple Dead-Nettle, are re-populating the rows. There are too many to weed and they are well-established. Fortunately, they, along with Henbit, can coexist with the blueberry plants in this location since they do not compete for moisture or nutrients.
The plants are lightening up but there are no leaves yet. The buds are few and far between. Checking in with Cape Cod Extension and other farmers we hear this is a wide-spread problem this season. It is due primarly to the frigid cold temperatures and lack of snowfall over the winter. The fact that we are not pruning or mulching contributes but not to the extent that we see in the field. Time will tell what sort of crop we will have come July.
Meanwhile, we are hard at work removing the irrigation boxes that fed our drip irrigation system as we continue to move in the direction of "wilding" the farm.
