Farm Journal ~ April
The blueberry plants underwent a remarkable transition over the month of March, awakening fully from their winter slumbers. The field is aglow with pale amber, spring green, and soft gold shades. The buds, set last fall, are ever present and loosening their tight protective grip. Soon they will unfurl and tiny leaves will begin to appear along the stems to support their growth.
The wildflower meadows have been mowed as they are every spring and we will welcome wild violets and lupine by the end of the month, and sundry other plants which populate the borders. For the first time in decades we are not out in the field pruning. It is an odd feeling. It is the first step toward our eventual evolution to a quieter farm.
