One of many reasons May is a merry month is that the pruning is nearly done!
Pruning has been heavy this year following on last spring's light to non-existent pruning; not our normal practice. Our pile of pruned branches seems sky-high and will require several days of controlled burning this year.
It is always a difficult time for some of us. Some of us are occasionally banned from the field during pruning due to high levels of anxiety and griping. Pruning is necessary for the plant's health and for the production of great tasting berries- this is a fact. But so many berries lost is another...
The blueberries are leafing out and the buds opening under the warm spring sun and longer days. We will have a good crop this year but if and when we will open to the public remains undetermined. In other words, it remains to be seen, like so many things now, but we will keep you all well posted. Last year we hosted a few private groups and we sold our berries at Hart Farm, a back-up plan on the table again this year as Plan B, for blueberries.
