Farm Journal ~ March
Snow is falling, snow on snow, snow on snow on snow...
As this month begins we know that spring is stirring beneath all this winter's snow but there is no farming work that can be done, but dreaming, until it shakes off its slumber and rises up. We will be ready when it does.
Mid-month now we can get back into the field finally. We lost a couple of fir trees in the storms but the plants were not damaged. However, we can clearly see that nearly half of the plants in the field have not fared well since last year. If the weather had been different we believe they would have survived the transition underway at the farm- no nets, no pruning, no watering. The two-year drought and annual insect invasion during this transition was too hard for many of the plants to bear- but not all! The snow is gone and there is color on the plants with the first small buds appearing. Dormancy is over and we will triage the strong plants and see how things go, as farmers do...
