Farm Journal ~ May
Picture
Spring has swept over the fields with its brilliant colors so rapidly we can hardly believe the change from one day to the next. It seems as if it is happening much more quickly this year. We have gone from bud to blossom and leaf on every plant. Although we are not pruning or netting this year just a little pruning might be in order on some of the old weathered canes, still, in beautiful contrast with the green new growth.
There will be no shipment of Bumblebees this year. The locals have the field all to themselves and are dashing about foraging for nectar- for now most provided by weeds.
The perennial Purple Dead Nettle and Henbit are mixing it up with our wild Violets, though the Red Sorrel, a personal favorite, stands gracefully alone along the netting posts. Of course there are Dandelions everywhere.
We will continue to irrigate all month when there is less precipitation than the plants might need so there is the work of cleaning out the irrigation lines and nozzles. Among them the other day, at the base of a blueberry plant, but not close enough to get sodden, we discovered a bird's nest, freshly woven this spring with great industry and art. Perhaps a peaceful dove?
