Farm Journal ~ December
The blueberry plants have entered their dormancy, a nice winter's rest after a busy year. The buds set this fall will remain securely closed until next March.
All deciduous trees and shrubs take time off to rest and regenerate at the end of their seasons. The leaves that have worked so hard all spring and summer drop, one by one, and add themselves to the rich mulch we provide. The new canes are a rich crimson red amidst the old weathered gray branches.
There would be no summer harvest without this winter rest. And we can learn some good lessons from our arboreal companions. We celebrate their staying power and their innate wisdom, as well as the bounty they share with us.
