Farm Journal ~ December 2022
December...the last flare of fall color is still present in the field but nothing gold can stay as Frost wrote.
Soon the blueberry canes will assume their bright crimson color as they fall more deeply into their winter slumber. The plant's dormancy period will last until early March. Their buds have been set for spring and their leaves have dropped. We have added leafy mulch to what they provide themselves to protect their roots and provide sustenance.
The days are short and the nights long. The wintering over birds gather seeds and the deer forage along the wood line. Coyotes enter and exit. It is hard to fathom how wild creatures endure the winter months ahead but it is nature's cycle after all.
